Slumdog Millionaire and “Jai ho”

I had read so many reviews and mostly contrasting that I thought i`ll give SM a miss. I hate bad movies and after Chandni Chowk to China my appetite has taken a huge blow. Dev D restored it but only a little. But then as an emotional Indian when I saw it sweeping all Academy people and bagging awards in bagful I finally decided to watch it.
I have seen couple of Novel Adaptations…namesakes (no connection between movie and the book), Horse whisperer, Lord of the rings, Da Vinci code...etc...And not all movies have done justice to the book. So I had my apprehensions.
So my point of view on the 8 Oscars winner is:
Is it the Best Film: No I have Seen better, May be TZP was better but then TZP was not nominated SM was
Is it the worst Film: Definitely not. We have had Dilli6, CC2C, Billu Barber, Singh Is King, Hey Baby, Kismat Konnection , Tashan...
Does it Sell Poverty Porn: May be but I am again unsure. If I accept that it sells India in Bad light then I should be calling it a realistic depiction. And if it’s not India then it’s purely creative depiction then there no issue of selling my country short.
What I don’t understand the sudden hysteria and pseudo intellectualism. I mean we essentially are a country of dumb cinema. our highest grosser are Ghajni & OSO (definitely not intelligent…unless you also ve short term memory loss) and sorry to say Mr. Amitabh you have also done movies like Lal Badshah and we have seen them so the whole point of view of selling my country short is invalid cause our films have been categorized as circus and that’s been the reputation whatever you may feel.
Does it worth an Oscar: who knows…when SRK can win filmfare for Ramjane, or Kareena for Jab we met… I wonder do we even have a case.
Another Debatable issue: Rehman`s best work? Not really …I also believe the best work was in Bombay(funnily it too was a love story  based on the same city) but we never bothered about Oscar then. So why bother now. Rehman`s been phenomenal from a decade.
Child Artists have been excellent, Cinematography is beyond words and couple of dialogues is defining. (like when Jamal tells Lathika “ I love you” and she says So!! ) What I didn’t like , the Movie was trying to stretch the scope. Story making amends to include slums, communal riots, prostitution, auctioning virginity, organized begging all via 1 common chord makes the life of the protagonist extremely interesting and less believable. But then as I said if you don’t think it’s realistic, arty Oscar type cinema it makes the whole thing worth watching.
So is it an Indian Film or is it still westerner`s view? Considering Maharashtra Congress seeking credit for its Oscars then who can question otherwise. I think film has intelligent use of wit and what it has managed to do is to put countries intellectuals and politicians made to use unintelligent ridicule. But yes I think movie is Indian. Not just the technicians and cast but also in treatment, use of laud background score, lauder characters, song and dance ritual, the over dramatic love story.
I am not overboard or anything with its Indian-ness. Like when every second NRI kid wins the spelling bee contest you just feels nice about his/her Indian roots despite being nothing Indian about it. It will not increase any remittance to India or FDI in Indian Schools or colleges. So just feel nice about Movie`s Indian roots and be happy.
Considering It at least did changed the slum-dog/life of the child artists involved in it :-  “ Jai- Ho”

very well written, but i have a different point of view....i guess what has made this movie such a popular one worldwide is its presentation....both India and US can relate to the Kaun banega Crorepati/Who wants to be a Millionaire format...Jamal Malik cud or cud nt hv been a slum dweller, but recounting his experiences on the basis of the questions asked was what made everyone sit up and take interest...further, inclusion of slums, communal riots, prostitution, auctioning virginity, organized begging in the life of Jamal Malik was not all that unbelievable becoz he grew up in slums and was a poor chai wala when he grew up....these things in one life is amazing for ppl like us, not the ones who live on street.
All in all i loved the movie for sheer presentation. That may be the only intelligent part in the movie, for all i care.... and i agree all this hue and cry from our typical run of the mill movie makers is nothing but a case of sour grapes. :)

yes i agree anjana. It may be over hyped but then we always love the underdog movies. And i believe the movie has got an ernest storytelling about it.Jamal always looked at unease n trying to make sense of things happening in his life.which actually most of us identify and thats exactly the connect in the movie which makes it worth watching all the drama.

it's a good read.. but somehow im not fully convinced on it rcving 8 oscars... rahman's music is not something that i will hum along everytime.. n for direction.. i wld rate Dark Knight higher.. atleast the movie kept me engrossed..

yeah dt my way of making myself socially relevent :). And I am actually glad that movie manage to gather so much of controversy else feel good movies get dismissed on social fronts

Ashwin said...

@ ashish as for Dark Knight..I am not a huge fan of superhero movies and if you ask me take out "Joker" and Batmobile and theres nothing left there

Ashish Rathi said...

agreed Dark Knight was a Super Hero movie.. but it was not just another one of the lot.. for once there was a strong underlying story line.. some great performances.. superb direction.. that's what makes a movies complete..

slumdog did miss some of these elements...

I agree with your view abt much hype of this movie... but in a way it gathered much attention because it depicted the true condition of slums and because of its picturisation & awesome music... there were many good films in the past which I thought should have made an entry into oscars like Lagaan, TZP, Rang de Basanti, etc... but the thing was these movies did not have foreign producer, director, cinematographer, etc...so did not gather much fame abroad.. But, I am happy that slum dwellers in India got fame and recognition through this movie... Jai Ho !!!

@ Ashish ..srry to remind you both hero n heroin were kinda sorry in Dark Knight.Heath Ledger was phenomenal and he gt an Oscar for it aint it
@ vishal as per the system its easier for a movie to be nominate din a general category rather than best foreign film category...and sometime you have to accept that west have bettr technicians...and as for the storyline... its based on a Indian Novel my friend :)

People...we cannot compare movies like Dark Knight and Slumdog Millionaire....they are comletely different categories...its like comparing Rang De Basanti with Krish or even koi mil gaya and arguing which one was better....Not Done and not fair at all for the makers of both the movies...i thoroughly enjoyed Dark Knight, but y shd that mean that i shd not like slumdog....and as ashwin pointed out, if SRK gets an award for Ramjaane, no one is surprised coz may be that is "THE SRK", then for god sake slumdog is far far ahead a movie, and it derserves an oscar coz the jury thinks so and decided accordingly...we may disagree... but the people concerned are not asking us....so lets not get into which movie deserved and which dint...if it is nominated, it is deserving...as a moviegoer, we shd feel pampered at the hands of Hollywood and sit back and be happy for the winners.

well, i would go with Ashish totally..
@Ashwin, why shud u remove the Joker and Batmobile out of the movie. dude, if u take away the good things of any movie, it will be nothing.. and interestingly, the dark knight wud have been able to make quite some impact, as the very script, the overall story line, the casting as well the as the direction integrated seamlessly.. that is what makes a good movie.. the visuals very stunning. the darkness was intriguing.. and it managed to keep u glued to ur seats for full 3 hours.. for a western director, its an amazing feat..
also, i think ur too influenced by indian cinema and concept of hero and heroin.. dude, the very fact that batman and his gf were not the central characters and the story revolved around different people shows the maturity of the movie and the concept behind it as a whole..
@ Anjana.. I also liked SDM.. but the only point is that The Dark Knight was better  And we feel it was injustive to TDK that it wasn’t even nominated, just because it was a superhero movie..

And Ashu.. Finally u have done it… It’s a record.. and im proud of you for this amazing feat u have achieved with this post.. And as always, I have contributed ;P

PS: Sory for the late comment

SM is probably the most over-analyzed movie of all times LOL.

I liked it a lot, to tell you the truth. I have met many people who's lives were very similar to the lives of those kids. Of course they didn't make it to the Millionaire show but that's another story.

What made the movie really sweet was that he didn't care about winning the money, he only went on the show because he knew she'd be watching. He had an innocence about him that was very refreshing.

@ agnes
yes i agree , plus India in present times is such a pot-pouri and summition of so many half truth`s that only that innocence could have grasped the essence and worth a watch.
